The Northern Short Story Festival and Comma Press are delighted to present a day of online events, showcasing and celebrating the short story form, featuring emerging and acclaimed British writers alongside international authors.

All the events will take place on Saturday 16th October, and will be hosted on Zoom.

The Northern Short Story Festival present their 2021 Academy Showcase, with guest author Lucie McKnight Hardy.

The Northern Short Story Festival proudly presents six short story writers all of whom applied to join the Academy in 2020 and were successful! This event showcases just what it is that makes our Academy graduates so special. Come along to hear their stories and what they have to say about short story writing and being part of the Academy. This event is hosted by Anna Chilvers.

Our readers are LMA Bauman-Milner, Glenis Burgess, Monica Dickson, S.K. Perry, Rob Schofield and Hannah Walton-Hughes.

This event will feature a guest reading from Lucie McKnight Hardy, author of Dead Relatives (Dead Ink, 2021) which is Lucie’s first collection of short stories. It covers themes of motherhood and the fragile body, family dynamics and small-town tensions, unusual traditions and metamorphosis. Lucie McKnight Hardy’s stories have featured in a variety of publications, including Best British Short Stories 2019, Black Static, The Lonely Crowd, The New Abject from Comma Press and as a limited edition chapbook from Nightjar Press. Her debut novel, Water Shall Refuse Them, was published by Liverpool-based Dead Ink Books in 2019. The Guardian said of it, ‘Expertly juxtaposing folk horror and everyday reality, this impressive debut conveys an atmosphere of imminent menace.’ She grew up in West Wales, and has since lived in Liverpool, Cardiff, Zurich and Bradford. She now lives with her family in Herefordshire. She has an MA in Creative Writing from Manchester Metropolitan University.

Anna Chilvers is a writer, a runner, a long-distance walker, a mother, a teacher and a reader. She has three novels published by Bluemoose; East Coast Road (2020), Tainted Love (2016), and Falling Through Clouds (2010). She has written a collection of short stories, Legging It (Pennine Prospects, 2012) and has also written poetry and scripts. She is currently studying for a PhD in Creative Writing. She is the Academy workshop leader.
