The Rosie Effect. Review by Jess Haigh and Competition Give Away.

download (1)In 2013, the world met Don Tillman, Professor of Genetics. Don can remember every single cocktail recipe he has ever read, organises his meals according to a carefully worked out and optimised schedule, and has never had a second date. In The Rosie Project, Don sets out to conquer ‘The Wife Problem’, using his ability to think without emotion and brilliant logical and organisational skills to find his perfect woman. On the way, he meets Rosie, who fits none of his criteria, but who inevitably he becomes attracted to.

The Rosie Project was a huge best seller for Graeme Simsion, and one of the Leeds Book Club’s Sharing Stories books of 2014. The Rosie Effect is the much longed for by the fans sequel, now out in paperback, and we’ve got one copy to give away to a lucky winner.

Now living in New York, Don has adapted to life with Rosie, learning to accommodate the needs of his new love, working in a cocktail bar as well as Columbia University, and making the most of new friendships. When Rosie drops a bombshell, and his old pal Gene rocks up, having been finally thrown out of his marital home for his infidelities, Don finds himself having to fix numerous problems, and juggle several roles and intrigues. As Don’s life becomes more and more complicated, can he maintain his hold on his mental state, or will he have to eventually give up and return to his previously organised and trouble-free life?

This is a sequel rather than a stand-alone novel. Like The Rosie Project, it is filled with moments of humour and pathos, and Don continues to be one of the most likeable characters around. Focussing on the importance of male friendship, and how people need to be clearer in communicating with each other, the series will make you both laugh, cry, and, in many cases, have you nodding your head in recognition.
