Meet Our Academicians: Emily Walker

In advance of opening our Academy submission window for 2022/23, we are profiling our 6 Academicians of 2021/2022.

Meet Emily Walker.

Hello, my name is Emily Walker, I am a writer from York who has been published in Ellipsis Zine, the York Literary Review and Sink Magazine. I have also been long-longlisted for the Brick Lane Short Story Prize 2021. I am currently studying an MA degree in Creative Writing with York St. John University, and have previously worked as a Secondary English teacher. I am fascinated by incorporating elements of body horror and gothic fiction to illuminate the subjective experiences of physical health issues, and am currently working on a collection around reproductive health that I hope to study as part of a PhD.

Being part of the Academy has been an invaluable experience. Receiving such detailed, technical feedback from experienced writers was incredibly useful, and hearing these same writers be excited about my work helped enthuse my passion and confidence for writing even more so. I mostly enjoyed getting the opportunity to read stories from such talented people, being privy to the construction of their story at various stages, and discussing their creative choices. It was a pleasure to get to know such a gifted and welcoming group of people (and the socials out for dinner were also a wonderful bonus!) I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to have been part of the Academy, and to now continue as alumni.

You can contact Emily on Twitter.

You too can join our Academy. We’re opening our submission window on Tuesday 30th August. Read more here.
